Short stroke gas piston systems are a type of gas piston operating system that's common in modern rifles. In these systems, the gas piston travels a shorter distance than the bolt carrier, and is not connected to it. Short stroke gas piston systems have some advantages over other systems, including:
- Cleaner running: Short stroke systems run cleaner than direct impingement (DI) systems.
- Less recoil: Short stroke systems have less recoil than long-stroke systems because the piston doesn't directly cycle the bolt.
- Higher accuracy: Short stroke systems have higher accuracy than long-stroke systems because the piston doesn't directly cycle the bolt.
